Players will first meet Hugo during their firstvisit to Battahlduring the ‘Mercy Among Thieves’ quest where Hugo will be betrayed by the leader of the Coral Snakes, Lanzo.
Dragon’s Dogma 2: All Conditions, Elements, And Debilitations
DD2 has a ton of things that can influence battles. Some of these include Conditions/Debilitations and Element Damage. Here’s a breakdown of those.
Hugo will be captured by the Battahli guards and sent to prison, and Benjamin, the guard captain, will ask you to attempt to get something out of Hugo in Gaol by offering him some guidance, triggering the start of the quest ‘Off the Pilfered Path’.

How To Offer Hugo Guidance
Freeing Hugo is not the point of this quest, and while you can technically use something like theMakeshift Gaol Keyto get Hugo out of jail, it’ll make every guard in the vicinity permanently hostile towards you and won’t progress the quest either. Best avoided. To progress ‘Off The Pilfered Path’, here is what you need to do.
Step 1: Visit Hugo in Gaol(shown above) and talk to him multiple times. Keep talking to him until he tells you about his history with the Coral Snakes.
Step 2:Complete‘Tolled To Rest’ questline in the Ancient Battlegrounds. Lead Oskar to the cenotaph so that he can ring the bell. Keep in mind that this is a notoriously buggy quest as Oskar is prone to disappear often. Keep him close to avoid failing.
Step 3:Wait a dayandreturn to the Battahl Gaol.Facing Hugo, turn left, and you’ll trigger a cutscene with Brefft, a former Coral Snakes member ready to sell out Lanzo and spill the details about what really happened to Hugo.
Step 4:Talk to Hugo again andtell him what Brefft said. Wait another day and return to Gaol to find out that Hugo has killed Brefft and escaped prison.
Step 5:Travel to theAncient Battlegroundand follow the quest marker to Hugo’s location. Climb the tower where Oskar rang the bell and turn left to find Lanzo and his crew’s hideout in a dilapidated building.
The journal entry doesn’t show the Hourglass, butthis is a timed quest. If you fail to find Lanzo and his men in their designated location, it means they, alongside Hugo, are already dead. It seems Hugo kills Lanzo but dies in the attempt if you fail to reach this area in time. Return to Bakbattahl and talk to the guards to finish the quest.
Step 6: Defeat Lanzo and his men. Hugo will arrive just to see you deal the final blow. Completely lost, Hugo will ask you to find him a job to earn an honest living.

How To Find Oskar A Job
There are two possible jobs (that we know of) that can be offered to Hugo.
I got the ‘good’ ending in Short-Sighted Ambition, which is why I couldn’t offer the job at Isaac’s in the screenshot above.
If you’ve neither job to offer Hugo right at that moment,he’ll return to Battahland stand around in the marketplace waiting for you to find something. This will complete ‘Off the Pilfered Path’ and you’ll be rewarded with:
