For the most part, Akira Toriyama’sDragon Ballwas about Son-Goku and his insatiable desire to break past his limits. This constant urge allowed him to push the physical and mental limitations, allowing him to become a Super Saiyan. This epic transformation is probably the most recognized aspect of the series, not only for the ardent fans of the show but also for the ones who do not watch it.

Fans of the title would know that the SSJ transformations are the biggest upgrade that a Saiyan can go through. Despite featuring some epic transformations that have led to some memorable moments, along the way, there have been some useless transformations featured by Toriyama-Sensei.
One of them is Super Saiyan Grade 3, which Vegeta and Future Trunks attained during the Cell Games Saga. However, the transformation is misunderstood because it was used for something grand that made the entire saga a 10/10.

Dragon Ball’sMost Useless Transformation is Deeply Misunderstood
As fans know, inAkira Toriyama’smagnum opus, Super Saiyan transformations play a major role in the progress of the story. Once the Saiyan unlocks the first form, they can train themselves to unlock new forms of this profound power.
However, not all SSJ transformations are meant to work in favor of the characters. Sometimes, these forms are a burden to the Saiyan, where instead of being a part of the franchise, it is merely used to progress the story. One instance is Super Saiyan Grade 3, which is considered to be the most useless form in all of the series featured over the years.

“Those are qualities Broly utterly lacks”: Dragon Ball Theory Says Akira Toriyama Gave the Legendary Super Saiyan a Handicap That’ll Never Let Him Surpass Goku
Interestingly, this transformation was added by Akira Toriyama during the Cell Saga and had a greater purpose. This sped-up imperfect transformation featured by Vegeta and Trunks gave a tough time to the antagonist, as he was taken aback by the massive rise in power level.
However, once Cell achieved his perfect form, it did not take him long to destroy and humiliate the two Saiyans. Though the form is ardently hated by the fandom, a content creator (@CarthusDojo) expressed their view on why they“really like”it.

They explained that Super Grade 3 was useless, and that was the point behind it because both Vegeta and Trunks“were trying to surpass the Super Saiyan wall the wrong way.”

Even the manga and anime showcase how Kakarot realized the right path forward to master SSJ without the way it is. Hence, SS Grade 3 exists to“push the story forward, leading to something better.”Indeed, the story led to something greater as Gohan’s breakthrough by mastering the SSJ transformation made the finale memorable.
Dragon BallFans React to Why SS Grade 3 Was Important to the Series
Even though the form is vehemently hated by the fandom, it played a key role in the arc that made the saga so memorable in theDBZfranchise. As a result, the viewers never realized this intriguing perspective on the transformation because they focused on the creator’s positive traits.
They commented,

@Leo-gi60b commented,“I wish they could use these kind of concepts to push forward SSG and SSB’s designs (even though we have UI, UE and Beast now anyways)”
@Thekumasir commented,“People always think that dragon ball is nothing but mindless fighting with a “just be stronger” story line but they actually put a lot of thought into it”
@Protectorofchi11i commented,“Grade 3 is my favorite form especially when trunks used it in his saiyan armor truly on of my favorite dbz designs”
@ivanblue cool commented,“Grade three sucks. Ss3 sucks. Guess everything with a 3 in it is bad. Meanwhile you got ultra instinct and super Saiyan having the word “mastered” in it and it’s awesome”
@AhmedHussain-ju6xd commented,“Using ssj grade 3 or 2 with quick change like they switched between god and blue would have been really cool”
This form was also featured once inDBS,during the Goku Black Arc, which was as useless as it was back in the day. Hence, the fandom keeps it on thesame tier as SSJ3 in terms of usefulness and popularity.
