Bulma is one of the most highlighted examples of privilege and power inDragon Ball. Raised as an heir to a vast fortune with enormous influence, she developed an entitled personality that often clashes with her underlying potential. Nevertheless, the depth of her character is usually diluted by her role as a companion to her husband, Vegeta, the proud and strong Saiyan warrior.

Bulma from the Dragon Ball series

The stark contrast between their personalities and abilities has resulted in a number of contradictory appraisals regarding Bulma’s character, and many show the inconsistencies. Is her entitled nature truly a reflection of her inner strength, or has the narrative ofDragon Ballwatered down her potential?

Vegeta Could Live Up to His Pride, But Bulma Couldn’t

Bulma’s bravado hid some of her vulnerability, especially when she went up against a big fish like Frieza. Her over-confidence in commanding Z Fighters never let her hold in the face of utterly powerful enemies. However, there was this one time when she showed her nonchalant nature by slapping Beerus, who spoiled her birthday party. She shows this kind of bravery, but not as much is needed for existential threats.

One very telling example of that would be Bulma’s reaction to Frieza upon Frieza’s arrival on Earth inDragon Ball Super. In that scene, she boldly stated that Gohan was good enough to take down Frieza. However, when Gohan clarified that he could only take down Frieza’s army and not the villain himself, Bulma backtracked very quickly.

Her sudden shift from an over-confident woman to begging Frieza for mercy really revealed an underlying fear and showed justhow much of a difference is therewithin her proud words and deeds. She clearly doesn’t justify being the wife of someone like Vegeta, who always lives up to his pride and never backs down in any situation.

Reasons Why Bulma is Intolerable For Some

Growing up as a heiress to Capsule Corp certainly shaped a major portion of Bulma’s core personality. People growing up with so much money and influence can be a little spoilt, and Bulma isn’t an exception. Her spoilt nature often has come up in the series, as she throws random tantrums whenever life is not going her way.

However, Bulma’s self-confidence and devotion are something worthy of admiration. But often these qualities are also veiled as narcissism and an attempt to manipulate others by using her charm. Bulma’s flirtatious tendencies often blur the boundary between playfulness and perversion, making her character delightfully nuanced.

Under the rough exterior, Bulma has a good heart, though. Her mistakes and weaknesses make her relatable and human. Even though at times she does not manifest the so-called noble qualities of friendship, Bulma’s inner goodness comes out through acts of kindness and compassion. Such moments remind us that no one is perfect, and some flaws do exist in everyone.
