Released in 2009,Dragonball Evolution, a live-action adaptation of Akira Toriyama’s celebrated series, embodies the “live-action curse”. The movie was atrocious and proved that not every popular series needs to be adapted in the live-action format. Even when it was first released, it garnered bad reviews for how terrible it was.

What makes the movie a topic of discussion once again after all these years isDragon Ball DAIMA. One of the recent episodes of the series had a scene that could have been a reference to the live-action movie. While it’s not great to be reminded of the horrors ofDragonball Evolution, it’s good to see everyDAIMAepisode being conscious of the history of the franchise as it makes these subtle references.

InDragon Ball DAIMAEpisode 6, Gendarmerie officers come looking for Goku. They describe his appearance to Shin, Glorio, and Panzy. Being Goku’s allies, they deny ever seeing him. As soon as Goku returns, Shin asks him if he can change his hair as he’s wanted by Gomah and his appearance is the only clue, Goku states that his hair is too resilient and it probably won’t work.

A similar scene takes place inDragonball Evolution, where Goku makes an attempt to change his hair but his spikes wouldn’t go down. This scene seems like a proclamation of the fact that Goku isn’t himself without his spikes. Goku’s spiky hairstyle is iconic, and this might just be a coincidence, but it could also be a reference to this scene from Evolution.

From the nostalgic art style to referencing other series from the franchise,Dragon Ball DAIMAhas a conscious approach toAkira Toriyama‘s legacy, and deserves more credit for being such a complete experience. Contrary to the praiseDAIMAdeserves, we haveDragonball Evolutionwhich gets hated endlessly, and even that doesn’t seem enough when we consider how terrible the movie truly was.

Here’s Why the Hate AgainstDragonball Evolutionis So Intense

Dragonball Evolutiontook the general storyline of the series and the characters to make its own version of it. They changed key plotlines and the characters didn’t resemble their anime-manga counterparts in the least. From Piccolo’s tweaked back story to Bulma feeling like a caricature of herself, the live-action fumbled hard.

After all these years, if someone mentionsDragonball Evolutionin a conversation, fans of the series wouldn’t think twice before going on a rant about why it was so bad. Even back in the day, the movie failed horribly both critically and commercially, which doesn’t surprise anyone.

The series was a completely original take on the story ofDragon Balland a bad one at that. It’s safe to assume that the makers just wanted to monetize the series’ popularity without doing their due research, and a half-hearted attempt like that got the treatment it deserved.

Dragon Ball DAIMAis available to stream on Crunchyroll.
