Director Sam Mendes is widely credited with revitalizing theJames Bondfranchise. The British filmmaker helmed two of the five movies starring Daniel Craig as the popular super spy. As a result, Mendes updated several iconic elements of the franchise, including the treatment and depiction ofBondgirls.
In an interview, Mendes talked about working with actress Bérénice Marlohe on the movie, who played the role of Sévérine. Mendes revealed how Marlohe was cast for the part and why she was perfect for a modernBondgirl, placing her above the likes of Eva Green and Monica Bellucci. Sam Mendesdirected the 2012 spy filmSkyfall, which is the third installment in theBondfranchise to starDaniel Craigas Agent 007. The film received critical acclaim and became the highest-grossingBondfilm of all time with a box-officecollectionof $1.109 billion.
In an interview withIndieWire, Mendes spoke about his work on the movie. During the chat, he also addressed casting actress Bérénice Marlohe asthe movie’s primaryBondgirl.
I put into a computer, “Design me a perfect Bond girl,” and it came back Berenice. And that’s how I cast her.
Mendes made the above statement, joking that Marlohe’s casting in the film was an automated affair.

However, Mendes added that casting director Debbie McWilliams brought him an auction tape of the French actress. After seeing the tape, Mendes felt that Marlohe was fantastic for the role and did everything he had imagined in the script. As a result, it makes sense why Mendes described Marlohe as the perfectBondgirl for the modern era.

In the same interview, Mendes also spoke about updating some classic elements for a moremodern take on the iconic super spy. The filmmaker revealed that he wanted to bring a new iteration of the secretary character Moneypenny, leading to the casting of actress Naomie Harris.
So in every sense we wanted somebody who was really an unconventional Bond girl. And, on top of that, I wanted somebody who could hold their own with Daniel.
Mendes further explained that the film’s iteration of Moneypenny was more than just a desk girl. Instead, he wanted the character to be equally good in the field. As a result, Mendes cast Harris who was then known for her work in thePirates of the Caribbeanfranchise.

Ultimately, it is safe to say that Mendes’ take worked well enough leading to Harris reprising her role in all the other movies starring Craig as Bond becoming an important ally to the spy. Thus, Mendes successfully reinvented an iconic supporting character from the franchise.
