Dambuster Studios, the development studio behind the upcomingDead Island 2, have said that the game’s FLESH system allowed it to create a “wide range” of zombies for the game.

After years of radio silence and delays by Deep Silver, Dead Island 2 is finally ready to hit store shelves next month. Originally announced all the way back in 2014, Dead Island 2 has gone through multiple studios before landing at Dambuster. The sequel was originally supposed to be developed by its predecessor’s creators, Techland.

Ultimately, the studio decided to focus its efforts on the development of Dying Light instead. Development duties were then passed to Yager Productions before being given to Dambuster in 2016.

Now, just a little over a month away until the game’s release, Dambuster has given various media outlets some hands-on time with the game. During the preview presentation, Dambuster expressed how Dead Island 2’s incredibly gory FLESH system, which stands for “Fully Locational Evisceration System for Humanoids,” has allowed them to create a “really, really wide range of zombies for the game.”

Discussing the FLESH system, Dambuster said, “This cutting-edge technology has been designed to deliver the most gruesome zombie experience ever seen in a video game. Anatomically correct layers of skin, fat, and muscle can be ripped away with machete point accuracy to reveal breakable bones and internal organs that are individually destructible.”

The studio also noted how Dead Island 2’s FLESH system has had an impact on the zombie variants within the game, saying, “As the flesh system is procedural, we can apply it really easily to any different zombie model. So that’s enabled us to make a really, really wide range of zombies for the game.”

Dead Island 2 features three different types of standard zombies, these are walkers, runners, and shamblers. Within the three groups there are a variety of different models, as to represent the diverse population of L.A. As players make their way through to streets of L.A, they will encounter clowns, firemen, policemen, fast food workers, and much more.

It’s not just costumes that vary between these zombies though, as Dambuster pointed out, “We’ve got zombies wrapped with barbed wire, they’re on fire, spouting electricity, running around with tanks of caustic goop on their back.”

That’s excluding apex variants too, which includes crushers, bursters, screamers, butchers, and more. All of these apex zombies are much more challenging to take down, and will require players to use the environment and their equipped skill cards to their advantage.

Dead Island 2 releases for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on April 21st.
