Dandadan

Like most mangaka, Tatsu was rejected by the editors. It wasn’t once but thrice that his stories were disapproved by the publishers. The failures made him give up until a word from his editor changed the course for good. By and by, the advice proved to be fruitful for the series’ success.

The word that salvaged Yukinobu Tatsu’s career

Before his breakthrough,Yukinobu Tatsuassisted Tatsuki Fujimoto in his mangaFireball. He also worked as a chief assistant for Yuji Kaku’s projectHell’s Paradise. Apart from that, both manga artists mentored Tatsu in his early days.

Like most manga artists, his journey to success was laden with obstacles. With a series of rejections and setbacks, his career was nothing short of arduous. This holds especially true for his initial days as a manga artist.

Following the rejection of his Jump Square zombie manga, he decided to give up on his career. After three consecutive rejections from Jump, he told Shihei Lin about his lack of zeal.Lin advised Tatsuto give up on structure and “draw freely”.

It was this very advice that helped the mangaka achieve fluidity in his work. This aspect is reflected in his masterpiece, especially with the movements, fights, and gestures.

Dandadan

Dandadanis a trailblazer in every sense

From its visuals to its storyline,Dandadanhas its pizzazz. This is especially true with the series’ unique art style. Its popularity and success is attributed to the series’ unconventional approach. Unlike its shonen contemporaries, the series features two protagonists.

The mangaka’s faith in the series and his persistent efforts led to its success. The introduction of a female protagonist in the Shonen series isn’t common. By doing so, he redefined the writing of female characters in the genre. There, however, is more to it.

The Strongest Bankai Ever Created by Tite Kubo Was a Previous Kenpachi Who Will Never Appear in Bleach Anime

The series blends occult, action, supernatural, comedy, and romance pretty well. One would assume it to be a muddled mess considering the array of genres. But not this one, especially with the careful handling of these themes. The series fuses urban legends and conspiracy theories and renders humanness to it.

Its retelling of tales coupled with the portrayal of masculinity sets it apart in the shonen genre. On top of that, the outlining of complex emotions like loneliness and sadness is impeccable. The series is a true trailblazer in most aspects. But there’s more to it.

Momo’s relationship with Okarun blurs the binary of friendship and romance. Both characters grow simultaneously and learn from each other’s experiences. Her bond with Seiko is a heart-rending representation of female friendships. All in all, the series is a complete treat for all readers and viewers.

Dandadanis available for streaming on Crunchyroll. The manga is available for reading on Viz Media.
