In the early 2000’s, one of the most impressive tech pieces in gaming wasCrytek’sCrysis, which was built using the studio’s proprietary engine named the CryEngine.

While other studios and game engines have since caught up to the technical brilliance of Crytek’s work, it’s undeniable how much of a technical showcase Crysis was for PCs back then. In thelatest issue of PC Gamer magazine(viaPC Gamer), Crytek talks about some of the work they’ve put into creating the engine and how powerful it was back then.

Crytek CEO Makes Distinction Between Photorealism And Video Realism

Crytek CEO Cervat Yerli states, “Video realism was about [how] things in motion should look real, as opposed to [in] screenshots,” explains Yerli. “Video realism allowed us to study motion blur, depth of field, animations, physical reactions. Breakable trees came out of this, right? Where we said we’ve got to have destruct[ible] vegetation.”

When it comes to making Crysis 1’s jungles as good as it can be visually, Crytek spared no expense and even went as far as sending a research team to Haiti to document an actual jungle environment.

Yerli recalls, “They took a gazillion photos and videos, and they studied the light interactions with the trees and the canopies for god rays, and subsurface scattering… this soft, green translucency where the sun is behind [the leaf]. Subsurface scattering was a technology that existed already in engines, but was super slow. Nobody had done it at scale.”

Crysis Next Gameplay Leaks & Fans Are Happy It Was Cancelled

Crysis Next’s gameplay just got leaked, and maybe cancelation was for the best.

It’s mentioned that Crytek refused anything less than high-quality dynamic lights and shadows in a detailed open-world environment. In addition to the visual fidelity, the flora had to move, as well, with how nature organically brushed and swayed the greenery and responded to characters brushing past it.

Speaking of characters, Crytek and the tech didn’t just focus on the environments, but also on characters as well. According to Yerli, Crysis included a skin shader that was precise down to the eyes, and it was so advanced that it could even make characters blush, which was unheard of at the time. Yerli admits, “We went over bonkers on this one,” and adds, “Even the eye had, like, shadow within the eyeballs. Shadow maps [are] calculated for the face itself. So when the light was shining from a certain angle, the nose would cast a shadow.”

While the last Crysis game was Crysis 3, released in 2013, Crytek has confirmed they are working on the next Crysis game, though there’s not much to chew on given all we haveis a teaser for it. If you want to check out the past Crysis games, Crytek has released theCrysis Remastered Trilogyon all modern gaming platforms.
