Narrating over clips of him composing music and Sea of Stars gameplay, Mitsuda revealed that he is aiming for a Super Nintendo-style sound. This theme was decided in collaboration with Eric W. Brown, the main composer of Sea of Stars. Mitsuda states that he and Brown are exchanging ideas to ensure that the game’s soundtrack feels unified.

To achieve an accurate ’90s-style sound for Sea of Stars, Mitsuda is resampling audio from the Super Nintendo. The 16-bit console makes video game music from this era distinct. The Inside the House of Indies video shows the composer at his desk doing some of the resampling work.

Canadian indie developer Sabotage Studio brought Mitsuda on board for the project in 2020. The news was announced inUpdate #6of the Sea of Stars Kickstarter campaign. A statement from Mitsuda, translated from Japanese, shares the composer’s confidence in the developer to evoke the classic style of role-playing games in a fresh way. “Without knowing exactly why, ‘I want to write music for this game’ was the feeling I had while seeing it convey the nostalgic golden age of the ’90s,” Mitsuda said. In the Holiday Event video, Mitsuda reveals that he is a fan of Sabotage Studio’s 2018 retro platformerThe Messenger.
