There’s always going to be love and adoration for the filthy, grotesque undead, and that appears to be confirmed after Capcom announced today that theResident Evil 2Remake has shipped 3 million units worldwide in its first week of launch. Yet another stunning result after a successful demo launch earlier this month.

The sales from theResident Evil 2remake will join the total sales of all of the games in the series, bringing the total —as of yesterday— to 88 million units sold since the firstResident Evillaunched in 1996.

It’s certainly an impressive figure for the remake of the 1998 horror. Back when it launched in 1998 it achieved total sales of 4,96 units and hit the top spot in the UK sales charts then, making it the fourth best-selling game in theResident Evilfranchise. 20 years on andit achieved the top spot again.

The remake utilized Capcom’s R&D facilities to build the game up fresh, making the 2019 version an actual remake rather than a remaster. This allowed Capcom to provide photo-realistic graphics using the RE Engine, and audio with Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 support and real-time sound image rendering utilizing binaural technology.

These figures also fare nicely when the game hit over 4.7 million downloads when Capcom launched the 1-Shot Demo. The last time we reported on the demo it hadhit over 1 million players.

In a press release, Capcom detail thatResident Evil 7 Biohazard —which launched in January 2017— hit 6 million units as of July 19, 2025. They hope to achieve a similar result in long-term sales forResident Evil 2.The launch of the title doesn’t mean it’s done aspost-launch DLC has been confirmedwith a DLC and original skin packs still to arrive. The Ghost Survivors DLC is set tostart rolling out this February.
