Brad Pitt has worn the face of many over the years. Be it classic characters from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s works or Chuck Palahniuk’s works, he certainly knows how to capture the essence of the characters that he plays. Considering this, and the amount of success that he has gained over the years, one would assume that he would be anyone’s first pick for a documentary.

However, this wasn’t the case when it came to Jeff Buckley’s mother. After the Grammy winner’s untimely passing, his mother was trying to perfectly encapsulate his essence in a project that detailed his life.
While Pitt would have been the perfect pick to play the legendary singer, it would seem that things got too complicated between the actor and Buckley’s mother.

As reported byVariety, it would seem that many people were contacting Buckley’s mother, Mary Guibert, in 2000 out of interest in making a biopic about the iconic singer. One of these people was Pitt, who noticed how similar he looked to Buckley and desperately wanted to do justice to his life when bringing it to the screen.

Guibert joked that she naturally looked at Pitt as a serious contender, and it would seem that he was trying very hard to make sure she would allow him to make the film. It was reported that Pitt ended up inviting Guibert to lunch at his Los Feliz home and even made her a VIP guest at his wedding with Jennifer Aniston.
Brad Pitt was put through the wringer by Mary Guibert
One can imagine that Brad Pitt was very passionate about playing Jeff Buckley in a biopic, considering just how much effort he was putting into convincing Mary Guibert. However, she did not make it easy for him, being very particular about the things that he needed to do to play the character.
We’re going to dye your hair, put brown contact lenses on those baby blues, and you’re going to open your mouth and Jeff’s voice is going to come out?

It would seem that Guibert asked the actor to dye his hair, wear contact lenses, and even completely change the way that he would talk to make sure that he was Buckley instead of playing him. While efforts were made, it would seem that the project was eventually sidelined.

Eventually, Amy Berg got involved and voiced her interest in making her narrative feature debut through the biopic. However, Buckley’s mother was naturally not interested in having a film about her late son be a learning experience for a filmmaker.
I didn’t feel secure in being in a someone’s-learning-on-the-job situation,

After some back and forth and discussion, Berg eventually settled on making it a documentary instead of a biopic, and Pitt maintained a form of involvement with the project as the executive producer.
