Jeanne is one of the most important secondary characters in theBayonettaseries. She is Bayonetta’s childhood friend and former heiress to the Umbra Witches themselves. The story of Bayonetta and Jeanne is a complex one spanning over five hundred years of history. Her story is made even more complex because she drops in and out of the events of the first two games.

So, while she is an important character (even a playable character), she is missing large chunks of the story while things progress. While this guide seeks to tell you about Jeanne, who she is, and the role she plays, anyone looking for a full recap of the first two games (especially ahead ofBayonetta 3) should see our explainer on Bayonetta’s backstory, linked at the bottom of this article. As for Jeanne, her story begins five hundred years before the opening of the first game.

Jeanne is an Umbra Witch first and foremost, one of the few who survived the famed Witch Hunts five hundred years prior. Umbra Witches exist in contrast to Lumen Sages. While Lumen Sages draw their powers from the angels to gain magic and wisdom, Umbra Witches draw their powers from demons and Inferno. Being friends since childhood, Jeanne sealed Bayonetta away five hundred years before the events of the first game to protect her from Balder (the last Lumen Sage) and his plans to use her to resurrect a being known as Jubileus.

Jeanne and Bayonetta

While Jeanne is Bayonetta’s best friend, Bayonetta has no memory of her at the beginning of the first game and Jeanne is hostile to the point of attacking Bayonetta. All of Bayonetta’s memories are lost, though she begins to remember Jeanne through their fights. It’s later revealed that Jeanne has been attacking Bayonetta at the behest of Balder, who has altered her mind with magic. Balder’s plan was to use Jeanne to trigger Bayonetta’s lost memories, awakening a power inside of her that Balder needs in order to resurrect Jubileus.

While Balder’s plan works and he is able to resurrect Jubileus, Jeanne overcomes the magic binding her. Once she breaks free of Balder’s maniacal magic, she allies with Bayonetta in the fight against Jubileus. After Jubileus kills Balder, Bayonetta summons Queen Sheba to punch Jubileus’ soul into the sun. Jeanne and Bayonetta then set to destroying Jubileus’ physical body to protect the world from any future attempts at resurrection.
