Players enjoying Act I ofBaldur’s Gate 3are still finding secrets, even well after the game’s release. Finding the Kuo-Toa, a secretive race of fish people, is challenging enough that many players miss the first encounter with them in Act I. During yourjourney into the Underdark, keep an eye out for this elusive little group.

Where To Find The Festering Cove
Reaching the Festering Cove is not particularly challenging, as the entrance is not in plain sight.You’ll need to venture to the Underdark: a subterranean world below the Sword Coast. You can reach the Underdark in a number of ways: Feather Fall down a chasm from the well in theBlighted Village, ride the Zhentarim elevator fromthe Zhentarim hideout, or travel belowthe Goblin Campto an abandoned Temple of Selune. But, be careful as the Underdark is a dangerous place.
Once underground, you’ll need to be aware of your surroundings. You’ll notice Torchstalk: a bright orange mushroom that grows everywhere in the Underdark.Torchstalk explodes in a fireball if you get too close, and the explosion can be fatal if you’re knocked off a ledge and into a chasm. The best way to deal with Torchstalk is toshoot it with an arrowat range. It’s very flimsy, so it should be easy to destroy any Torchstalk you come across.
Be wary: destroying Torchstalk can sometimes destroy valuables on the ground orset off chain reactions!
Head to the southern part of the Underdark map,betweenthe Arcane Towerand the Temple of Selune. Nestled in a little gap is a couple of mushrooms to hop over to a ledge with Torchstalk. Destroy the torchstalk, thenjump your partyacross the mushrooms and to the ledge.Climb down the Cragged Walland enter the Festering Cove.

How To Save The Kuo-Toa
Upon approaching the Kuo-Toa, you mustsucceed a Nature check or your character won’t know what to do. Nature is based on Wisdom, sopick a character with a high Wisdom statto succeed this passive check. You’ll recognize the Kuo-Toa and their odd deity, Boooal, who is suspiciously named like Bhaal, the god of murder. Tell the Kuo-Toa,“You can give it a rest. Your ‘god’ isn’t real.“You’ll then need to roll andsucceed a Persuasion, Strength, or Intelligence check. Pick whichever stat is highest for your character. Finally, tell Boooal,“I’ll just kill you and claim it for myself.”
Now, it’s time to find Boooal. This isn’t a terribly hard fight. Just be surenot to accidentally aggro any of the Kuo-Toawith AoE attacks.
If you didn’t manage to pass those skill checks, the Kuo-Toa and Boooal will both fight you, and you’ll have to kill them both, which doesn’t really give you any benefits. The last resort is to obey Boooal and kill one of your companions, or agree to kill for Boooal. A companion killed this waycan’t be resurrected, even with a Resurrection Scroll. But killing your friend will earn youthe permanent buff, Boooal’s Benediction, the same buff that comes with Boooal’s Sickle.

Who Should The Kuo-Toa Worship?
The Kuo-Toa need a god to worship, and you could be it. you may introduce them to a different deity or have them worship you. You can send them on their way or keep worshiping you, but regardless of your choice, the Kuo-Toa are now friendly and safe from their impostor god. There ultimatelyisn’t a narrative consequencefor what you choose here, so instead consider what your character might think!
Best of all, you’ll getBoooal’s Sickle, a rare sickle that gives the wielder Boooal’s Benediction: Advantage when attacking Bleeding Targets.
