Obsidian Entertainment’s upcoming action RPGAvowedis set in Eora, the setting of the studio’s beloved CRPG seriesPillars of Eternity. Pillars, as a CRPG, adopts an isometric camera angle as the lens through which the player experiences the world.

Avowed, on the other hand, will allow you to alternate between a first-person and third-person point of view, in the same vein as The Elder Scrolls. Game director Carrie Patel has described Avowed as a “first-person game with a third-person option.” The new camera angle allows us to see Eora from a completely different perspective as we’re now getting up close and personal with all the various beasties we’ve been demolishing in Pillars.

Still from the Avowed trailer of a warrior skeleton charging at the camera.

A New Perspective on Eora

A user (Orduss) on the Avowed subreddit hasmade an insightful observation. Avowed will be the first opportunity for players to look at Eora’s sky. For those of you who don’t spend hours poring over wiki pages, you may not know that Eora is quite interesting from an astronomical point of view.

Avowed Director Promises No “Copy/Paste Experiences” Between Main Quests And Side Content

Avowed’s creative director Carrie Patel said the studio puts “the same focus” into side content and main missions.

First, Eora has two moons, the more recognisable larger moon Belafa and the elusive second moon Cawldha Debh, a smaller moon with an irregular orbit. It’ll be interesting to see if Obsidian has invested time into the night sky and if there’s ever an opportunity for us to observe both moons in the sky at the same time.

Eora also has several constellations of stars, and some may harbour secrets. In Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire during the quest Bekarna’s Folly, you can stargaze using Bekarna’s telescope and at one point, you’re actively stopped from looking at something by Wael, the god of secrets, mysteries and revelations.

The opportunity to gaze at the night sky might seem like a small thing, but the opportunity to see Eora from a different point of view is going to be a novelty for Pillars fans, and I’m sure Obsidian has noted this.
