an adult live action scooby-doo film or series could go hard. Just because velma couldn’t do the concept doesn’t mean we can’t try again.

A rated-R live-actionScooby-Dooproject has been a long-time wish of fans. The latest project under the franchise,Velma, was heavily criticized by the public.

Mindy Kaling OnVelma’s Backlash

Velmawas first announced back in 2021, but it gained traction after the report of race-swapped characters.Mindy Kaling, who is of South Asian descent, received backlash for voicing the titular character. She explained onNBC’s Late Night With Seth Meyers:

There was a lot of, ‘So, not Velma?’ Those kinds of tweets. She’s such a great character, she’s so smart and I just couldn’t understand how people couldn’t imagine a really smart, nerdy girl with terrible eyesight who loved to solve mysteries, could not be Indian.

The actress said that it should not be a surprise to everyone that Velma could have South Asian roots, but what shocked Kaling was the strong reactions from fans. It made her think that she’s got to be careful in portraying the character.

Based on the fans’ enthusiasm with Jake Gyllenhaal and Sabrina Carpenter’sSNLskit, perhaps aScooby-Doolive-action series from them could redeem the franchise.
