Throughout his life span, Jimmy Carter has lived through many important events in history. But on top of being a former president and a Nobel-winning humanitarian, the actor was also apparently a film buff, which wouldn’t be the first for a U.S. President. Having apparently screened over 400 movies in the White House during his term in office, it’s safe to conclude that Carter was fond of the medium.

This further makes the fact that he died while Lily-Rose Depp’sNosferatuwas screening in theatres all the way more poetic, especially considering that he was there for all of the movie adaptations.

Jimmy Carter was there forNosferatu‘s debut on American soil

Considering the late president was born in 1924, the 38th U.S. president was alive to witness the U.S. premiere for the original 1929Nosferatu, 1979’sNosferatu the Vampyre, and the recent one,Robert Eggers‘Nosferatu. Interestingly, before the original’s U.S. premiere, the world almost lost the first movie due to the first major copyright infringement act in film history.

WhenNosferatuinitially debuted in Germany in 1922, it was sued by the Bram Stoker estate, given the similarities between the movie and Stoker’s Dracula. The Stoker estate eventually won the lawsuit, resulting in the cancellation ofNosferatu‘s planned London premiere. Moreover, considering films from the silent era were stored physically, all copies of the film were ordered to be destroyed (viaSilentology).

Fortunately for the medium, some copies survived, and a potential pirated version from Russia found its way to American soil, which led to its 1929 premiere, 7 years after the original’s debut in Germany.

The Idolprepared Lily-Rose Depp forNosferatu

Prior to starring in the critically acclaimed reimagining of the iconic IP,Lily-Rose Depppreviously headlined the panned HBO original,The Idol, which was canned after its first season. But despite being a disappointment, the HBO show assisted Rose in her preparation forthe acclaimed horror, as she describedThe Idolas a growth period in her life, both as an actor and a person (viaIndieWire).

I definitely feel like the physical work that I did on ‘The Idol,’ and the emotional work as well, definitely played a part in preparing me for this one [‘Nosferatu’], because it just taught me so much. Honestly, [‘The Idol’] was a real growth period for me as an actor and as a person. I feel like I just learned so much doing ‘The Idol’ that I carried [it] with me to ‘Nosferatu.’

Given how influential the first Nosferatu was to horrors, we’re grateful that not every one of its copies was banished to the shadow realm.
