Chris Hemsworth and Marvel Studios have confirmed thatThor 5is in development despite the underwhelming performance ofThor 4. It is reported that the film is set to begin filming in the fall of 2025. However, the previous film’s outcome will probably prompt the makers to proceed with caution in this film.

It is reported that Taika Waititi might not return to helm another film in theThorseries. However, conflicting rumors about Waititi’s interest also circle around the internet. It is likely that Tessa Thompson, Brett Goldstein, Russell Crowe, and India Rose Hemsworth will return toThor 5. However, there are some things that fans don’t want to happen in the upcoming film.
5Killing off fan-favorites too soon
One of the pressing issues with Thor’s supporting characters is that they don’t survive much longer. Out of Earth-616 Thor’s friends, only Valkyrie, Korg, and Sif have survived all four movies. Fans were over the moon to learn thatNatalie Portmanreturned as Jane Foster inThor: Love and Thunder. However, the return turned out to be brief as she succumbed to cancer.
Marvel’s Thor 5 Need Not Follow God of War: Ragnarok To Make Thor Great Again
Thor: Ragnarokkilled many important characters too. Odin passes away at the beginning of the film, unleashing Hela onto Asgard. The Warriors Three: Volstagg (Ray Stevenson), Fandral (Zachary Levi), and Hogun (Tadanobu Asano), were all killed by Hela. Karl Urban’s Skurge too had a short run but he went from a petrified traitor to a hero.
While Heimdall survives the events ofRagnarok, he is soon killed by Thanos inAvengers: Infinity War. Idris Elba made an appearance inLove and Thunder, as his character welcomed Jane to Valhalla. At this point, theThorfilms need to stop killing off supporting characters too early.

Interestingly, a theory suggests thatValhalla will be further exploredinThor 5. IfChris Hemsworth‘s character were to venture into the afterlife realm, he could reunite with all his loved ones who died. AnotherThorcharacter with ties to Valhalla is King Valkyrie, played byTessa Thompson, who previously guided the dead to the afterlife.
In this potential narrative, Thor may reunite not only with Jane but also with Odin, Frigga, and perhaps even Loki. Bringing back these characters would serve as a perfect tribute to Thor in the MCU, especially since the fifth film could potentially be his final appearance in the franchise.

4Sidelining Valkyrie again!
Valkyrie first appeared inThor: Ragnarokand proved right away that she was one of those badass women of the MCU. She relived her traumatic past during a brief encounter with Loki, seeing all her Valkyrie sisters fall against Hela. In the film, she teamed up with the Revengers to escape from Sakaar.
Thor 5 Bittersweet Update is a Good Thing for Chris Hemsworth’s Thunder God Swan Song after ‘Love & Thunder’ Disaster
Thompson escapes Thanos’ attack and is next seen alongside Fat Thor in the newly built Asgard at the beginning ofAvengers: Endgame. She joins the Avengers team during the final fight. When Thompson’s character was announced to be returning toLove and Thunder, fans expected to see her in a more meaty role.
While she was part of the entire film, the story hardly gave any focus to her story. She was made the King of Asgard at the end ofEndgamebut fans felt that the character wasn’t done proper justice. One popular theory beforeThor 4suggested that Valkyrie would finally pursue a romantic relationship with a woman.

However, the film concluded her arc with a simple mention of her bisexuality. Fans hope that the next film avoids this mistake with the character. It was speculated that Lady Sif would be the lucky girl to get together with King Valkyrie and fans wouldn’t mind seeing it play out on the screen.
InThor 4, Valkyrie and Jane Foster forged a friendship, which led many to believe that Natalie Portman’s character would become a Valkyrie. However, that didn’t happen after Jane’s death in the film.

3Don’t repeat the ‘Axl’ mistake with the next film’s VFX
The decline in the VFX quality wasn’t just aThorproblem but a general issue within the MCU. WhileDeadpool & Wolverinelargely brought back the studio’s lost reputation in the department,Thor 5needs to take extra care with its VFX.Thor: Love and Thundersaw some major issues in this department.
“Give him Thor 5”: Kevin Feige Should Not Do the Same Mistake as Warner Bros as His 1 Move May Save Chris Hemsworth’s Drowning Franchise
Marvel Studios drew criticism from fans when they submittedThor 4under the visual effects category at the 2023 Academy Awards. The appearance of many fully CGI characters forced the film to heavily depend on VFX artists. These artists were required to work under stressful environment during the pandemic to polish things up.
Obviously, the workload reflected in the work as all shots weren’t properly worked on. One of the scenes where Heimdall’s son Axl contacts Thor through his vision was poorly executed in the film. The scene saw the character’s head being weirdly suspended in air and the spotty CGI was clearly visible.
During an interview forVanity Fair, Taika Waititi and Tessa Thompson examined aThorscene, where Korg appeared blue instead of his usual grey. Waititi mocked the poor CGI in the scene and earned mixed responses from fans online. Waititi’s response evoked the criticism that the director wasn’t serious about the film’s visual work.
In order to sweep these CGI criticisms under the rug, Marvel needs to come up with high-quality visuals forThor 5. After the unionization of the VFX workers, things have started to look up in the visual department (via Variety).
2No more Gorr the God Butcher, please!
One of the most disappointing aspects ofThor: Love and Thunderwas the wasted potential of a talented actor likeChristian Bale. Bale played Gorr the God Butcher, who looked nothing like his comic-book counterpart and was nothing short of an abomination in the film.
Thor 5 Can Do Christian Bale Justice by Using a Marvel Comics Storyline to Bring Back Gorr (In a Way)
In Marvel Comics, thecharacter had a more menacing look, with tentacles, a scarred face, and a black hoodie extending into a long cape. However, the film version made him more like a ghost than a menacing villain. Bale, an actor known to go out of his way to change appearances for a character, would’ve killed it in the comic-accurate depiction.Taika Waititilater explained his creative decision toIGN:
A thought very early on that his face in the comics unfortunately does kind of resemble Voldemort. People are just automatically going to make that connection. So we decided just to depart from that design a bit more, and still keep elements of the tone.
It wasn’t just the costumes that went wrong for Bale. Unlike Marvel villains like Thanos and Killmonger, Gorr didn’t have a compelling narrative. He was hyped to be this God-killing villain but most of his butchering happened off-screen, which did not help in looking past his appearance. To make matters worse, many scenes with Bale were cut at the editing table.
Thor 5should bring on a powerful villain to get over the Gorr debacle. While Brett Goldstein’s Hercules is a great choice, the film could bring another powerful cosmic villain, who will have a larger effect on the Marvel Universe. TheThorfilms need a villain more powerful and evil than Hela and the ruler of Hell, Mephisto, fits the bill perfectly.
1The struggle to find the right tone forThor 5
TheThorfilms struggled with their tone during the initial phases of the MCU. Both Kenneth Branagh’sThorand Alan Taylor’sThor: The Dark Worldhad a Shakespearean touch to them and hence had a more serious tone. As a result, the Asgardian Avenger couldn’t achieve the solo movie success of bothIron ManandCaptain America.
Thor 5: Kevin Feige Must Bring the Darkest Nemesis of Chris Hemsworth’s Thunder God That Can Perfectly Tie Up With Loki’s New Status as the God of Stories
Things changed when Taika Waititi took over the directing duties inThor: Ragnarokand changed the tone for the better. The shift into comedy was welcomed largely and the film became the highest-grossingThorfilm in the franchise. However, when Waititi came up with the fourth film he had lost the magic that he created inThor: Ragnarok.
This doesn’t mean thatThor 5should look for a major tonal shift. The slapstick humor and wacky improv comedy would still work for the fifth film. However,Thor: Love and Thunderfailed at one thing thatRagnarokdid best. Despite the comedic tone, the film managed to maintain its emotional moments.Love and Thunder‘s biggest weakness was the lack of emotional elements in the story.
Even Hemsworth himself suggested that the tone of a fifth potential movie should be drastically different. He shared that reinventing Thor kept him invested in the project. He shared with Josh Horowitz of theHappy Sad Confusedpodcast:
I don’t know if I’m even invited back, but if I was, I think it would have to be a drastically different version in tone, everything, just for my own sanity… [laughs] Thor lost his mind that last one. He’s got to figure it out now.
Some recent reports suggested that Hemsworth’sFuriosadirectorGeorge Miller has shown interest in the new Thor film. It meant that the film’s tone would be more focused on action, which is not bad for the film at this point.
