Greta Gerwig has had great success as an actress, screenwriter, and director, most recently with the massively successfulBarbie. Gerwig directed and co-wrote the movie, which became 2023’s highest-grossing film.

The Lady Liberators

Gerwigrecently toldRolling Stonemagazine she’d be open to directing a superhero movie. That’s potentially great news for fans of the genre, as Gerwig would do a fantastic job directing so many potential films in the superhero genre.

This piece will look at fiveMarvel Cinematic Universemovies Greta Gerwig would do a fantastic job directing if she’s ever given the chance to oversee anMCUproject.

Captain Carter

Lady Liberators

In theBattle of EarthatAvengers: Endgame’sclimax, what appeared to be a foreshadowing of the introduction of the Lady Liberators to the MCU occurred. Greta Gerwig does female characters very well. Captain Marvel, Shuri, Pepper Potts, Valkrie, Mantis, Okoye, Wasp, Gamora, Nebula, and Wanda Maximoff came together in an epic moment to fight Thanos’ army. Greta Gerwig does female characters very well. If the Lady Liberators do form at any point in the franchise, Gerwig would be a brilliant candidate to direct their eponymous movie. The film would epitomize female empowerment, which Gerwig’s movies tend to inspire – look no further thanBarbiefor a great example – and it would be great to see her directing a bunch of kick-ass women.

Captain Carter

The first season ofWhat If…?introduced an alternate version of Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter, who received the Super Soldier Serum instead of Steve Rogers during World War II. Captain Carter has since appearedin 2022’sDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessand the second season ofWhat If…?Marvel Studios may, therefore, have further plans for the character, and if aCaptain Carterfilm is made, Greta Gerwig would be an outstanding candidate to direct it. No female character is more inspirational than Peggy Carter, and Gerwig would have a field day with her. Moreover, Gerwig would thrive if the movie was set during World War II, as she’s terrific at making period pieces feel modern.

Squirrel Girl

If there’s one thingBarbieproved, Greta Gerwig can take a film that many people thought would be ludicrous and turn it into a genuinely brilliant cinema.Barbiereceived multiple Academy Award nominations – and who would have predicted that when it was announced a few years ago? Of course, the movie didn’t take itself seriously, and that’s precisely what aSquirrel Girlmovie with Gerwig directing would have to do. Squirrel Girl is famously surprisingly formidable, and that’s the type of female character Gerwig would do a fantastic job of directing. There’s a genuine chance a Gerwig-ledSquirrel Girlmovie could become a surprise candidate for the best superhero movie ever made.

Young Avengers

It looks like Marvel Studios are building towards aYoung Avengersmovie – the climax ofThe Marvelscemented that idea. Characters like Kamala Khan, Kate Bishop, Skaar, Cassie Lang, and America Chavez will form the team’s base. Greta Gerwig’s experience directing coming-of-age movies, like 2017’sLady Birdand 2019’sLittle Women, would lend itself perfectly to such a film, as the inexperienced heroes come together, grow as a team, and ultimately flourish by defeating a powerful enemy. The strong female presence in the group would also be ideal for Gerwig to work with.

The MCUFantastic Fourmovie has already found its director in Matt Shakman. The next closest thing to a prominent superhero team with a family dynamic in the Marvel universe would be the X-Men. Therefore, seeing Greta Gerwig direct anX-Menmovie would be great. Gerwig is an expert at depicting familial relationships, with films likeLady BirdandLittle Womenas prime examples. There are multiple familial figures and connections within the X-Men, from fatherly figures like Professor X to the siblings Cyclops and Havok and married couples like Rogue and Gambit. There are also countless powerful females within the X-Men that Gerwig would direct superbly. Moreover, given the previousX-Menfranchise’s directors, Gerwig’s approach would differentiate from those movies unequivocally, which is much-needed in the MCU’s approach to the team.
