Watching movies on the big screen is an indulgence these days. Everyone prefers sitting in their homes, opening Netflix or Prime or any other streaming site, and watching whatever they feel like. But seems like viewers will have to indulge a little more than usual if they want to experience movies and not just watch them. Just ask Christopher Nolan, and he can tell you all about the IMAX experience.

And now, others are looking to emulate the same in their movie-making. In their 2025 slate, IMAX will be releasing no less than 14 movies in their “filmed for IMAX” format. And out of these 14, 5 of them are superhero flicks from both DCU and the MCU. Looks like it will be less of Netflix and more of IMAX for next year.
Audiences Will Enjoy 5 Superhero Movies “filmed for IMAX” in 2025
The “filmed for IMAX” format is an extravagant and odd idea for most, but that wasn’t all. It used up too much celluloid, which is why it was difficult to get these movies played on projectors. But one man, in recent times, has managed to change the negative perception about this format, who has been filming his movies entirely on IMAX for the last few years.
And now, looks like others are ready to try the IMAX pie, asIMAX will be releasing 14 moviesin the “filmed for IMAX” format in 2025. The titles includeCaptain America: Brave New World, Ryan Coogler & Michael B. Jordan’s untitled film,Thunderbolts*,Flowervale Street, Mission: Impossible 8, How To Train Your Dragon, Brad Pitt’s untitled Formula One movie,Superman, The Fantastic Four, Mercy, The Bride!, TRON: Ares, Blade, andChinese New Year.

How Christopher Nolan Changed The Movie Making Game With IMAX
Even before he started his career as a director,Christopher Nolanwas enamored with the idea of IMAX filming. While he is not the first director to release his films in IMAX, he is one of the few who shot his movies entirely in IMAX, likeTenetand of course,Oppenheimer. But his journey with the format started way back, duringBatman Begins, when he did a higher-resolution test of existing footage, to check how it would look on film.
There is a scene early inBatman Begins, whereChristian Bale’s Bruce Wayne picks up a rare blue flower on his way to meet Ra’s al Ghul, played by Liam Neeson. They did an IMAX upconversion (viaVulture) of that scene in 6k instead of the norm, 4k. Happy with the results, Nolan shot a few more scenes of his next feature,The Prestige, again starring Bale, in the IMAX format. And he hasn’t stopped since.

Slowly, Nolan began to incorporate more and more scenes filmed in IMAX in his movies, withThe Dark Knightbecoming the first ever movie to have multiple scenes shot in IMAX. Then he didDunkirk, Tenet, and lastly,Oppenheimer, the latter of which won an Oscar for both Best Picture and Best Director, which was predominantly shot in the IMAX format.

Nolan fell in love with this technique of filming, which he has been emulating in his work since his early days. And with each new movie, he takes it up a notch, adding more and more scenes shot in IMAX. His Oscar-winning directorial,Oppenheimer, is available for streaming on Peacock.
