Monica Long-Dutton is a conflicted character in theYellowstoneuniverse, to say the least. Her motivations and opinions keep changing throughout the run of the show with the initial seasons being the most annoying. Taylor Sheridan’sYellowstoneuniverse is certainly filled with interesting characters with diverse personalities.

However, fans often complain that the writers (Sheridan, specifically) should have focused on making the characters more well-rounded. How, you ask? Let’s find out the concerns fans have been voicing.
Why does Yellowstone’s Monica get so much hate?
Reddit is filled with threads dissectingeach character from theYellowstoneuniverse.Taylor Sheridancould learn from most of those comments and perhaps get an insight into the aspects that could have made the show better. Take Monica Long, for instance. At the beginning of the show, she is shown to live away from her husband Kayce Dutton.
While she lives with her parents, Kayce lives on the ranch with the Dutton family. Monica blames Kayce for their separation and doesn’t leave any moment unsaid that could prove her point. Though fans looked up to her as the moral compass of the show, Monica slowly deteriorated into a confused character who doesn’t know what she wants.

MostYellowstonecharacters have a motivation and a journey to pursue, a destination they are working towards. But Monica hangs in the balance as shehates the ranch one dayand suddenly falls in love with it the next day. This has fans screaming,“Pick a lane already!”
Not just this,Redditorsclaim that Monica is preachy and keen on pinning the blame on other people rather than holding herself accountable for her actions. Leaving inconsistency of her beliefs aside, Monica doesn’t shy away from benefitting from the Duttons whenever the need arises, like getting John to fix up a job interview for her.

One plot line could have fixed Monica’s character
Had Sheridan paid more attention to her character and made her more stubborn and determined,Kelsey Asbille’s Monicacould have been a likable character. The writers could have focused on her hatred for the Duttons since they destroyed her land, her people, and their way of living. This could have given her a more nuanced portrayal and made fans respect her beliefs.
Such a storyline would have also fixed her pendulum-like feelings for the ranch and she would have finally chosen what she stands for. A character with a moral dilemma is surely interesting, but one who gets pulled in all possible directions is plain stupid.
